Royal Swedish Opera to use Gasometer as its temporary main stage, 2027

The City of Stockholm and Miramis are converting one of Stockholm’s iconic brick gasometers into a state-of-the-art cultural venue for music, conferences, and exhibitions. The Gasometer is scheduled to open in 2027, and the Royal Swedish Opera will be one of the first tenants, using it as its temporary main stage during the Opera House renovation.

“We are delighted that the Royal Swedish Opera has chosen to relocate to the Gasometer at Stockholm Royal Seaport while the Opera House is being renovated. Together with Miramis, we are developing a cultural destination to which the Royal Swedish Opera’s presence will make a major contribution,” says Karin Wanngård, Mayor of Stockholm.

Completed in 1899, the brick gasometer is part of Gasverket, a former industrial site now being transformed into a vibrant district of offices, retail, services, and cultural venues. The City of Stockholm owns the building and is carrying out construction to create a "house within a house"; Miramis will operate the facility.

Through the collaboration between Miramis and the Royal Opera, visitors will be able to experience opera and ballet at Stockholm’s new cultural venue from 2027 to 2030. The Royal Swedish Opera will lease the Gasometer’s main auditorium, a theatre that seats 1,700 guests, and it will be equipped with next-generation technology. During the Opera’s off‑season, other productions and events will also be held in the auditorium. In addition, beneath a replica of the original circular industrial roof there will be a flexible event space, the Dome, which accommodates approximately 1,000 guests.
