House of Q, a new venue for queer culture in Värtahamnen.
Culture, creativity, and resilience. These are the guiding principles of House of Q, Stockholm’s new meeting place for queer culture, located at Malmvägen 1 in Värtahamnen.
In premises that formerly housed the headquarters of the clothing and homewares chain Indiska, House of Q has been established as a vibrant hub for art, culture, food, music, and events, a place that highlights and brings queer culture and queer history to life. House of Q is the first queer-run cultural house in Stockholm since Kolingsborg closed in 2015. That it ended up in Värtahamnen is no coincidence.
“We felt an immediate connection to the building from our very first visit. When we later discovered that our neighbour Skeppet had been a gay club as far back as the 1980s, it felt like the circle had closed. Support from both the City of Stockholm's culture and real estate departments was crucial to making the project a reality," says Peter Sandkvist, one of the founders.
Thanks to its proximity to other creative players in the area, such as Blivande and B‑K, and to a strong network of real estate developers who have shown genuine interest, House of Q hopes to become a natural part of the area's evolving identity.
“We want to be the least polished, least conventional option in the area. Here, our values should not only be written on paper, but they should also be felt in the walls. Everyone should sense that something is different when they step inside, even if they can’t quite put their finger on what it is.”
House of Q plans a broad and flexible programme of food, drink, cultural events, and live performances, from day into night, with a vision that is much bigger than the neighbourhood. A phased opening is taking place during autumn 2025, and the ambitions are high.
“We believe in the power of our community, both historically and in the future. As queer rights are being questioned around the world, it is more important than ever to claim, own, and run our spaces on our own terms. House of Q is intended to be such a place. Our aim is for 2025 to be the most exciting year in a long time, not just for us, but for the whole of Stockholm,” Peter Sandkvist concludes.
